On the acceleration of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays in Gamma Ray Bursts

چکیده

UHECRs are roughly isotropic and attain very large energies, E ∼> 3×10 20 eV . Conventional models fail to explain both facts. I show here that acceleration of UHECRs in GRBs satisfies both observational constraints. Using Mészáros and Rees’ (1994) model of GRBs as due to hyperrelativistic shocks, I show that the highest energies that can be attained thusly are E ≃ 10 θ−5/3n 1 eV , explaining the energy of the Bird et al. (1995) event even without beaming. The traditional photopion catastrophe affecting UHECR acceleration in AGNs is circumvented. An order of magnitude estimate shows that the total energy flux of UHECRs at the Earth is also correctly reproduced. A test of the model based upon the UHECRs’ distribution upon the plane of the sky is briefly discussed. Subject headings: acceleration of particles – gamma-rays: bursts

High energy cosmic-rays from gamma-ray burst sources: A stronger case

The suggested association between the sources of γ-ray bursts (GRB’s) and the sources of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECR’s) is based on two arguments: (i) The constraints that UHECR sources must satisfy to allow proton acceleration to > 1020 eV are similar to those inferred for GRB sources from γ-ray observations, and (ii) The average energy generation rate of UHECR’s is similar to the γ-r...

Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays and Neutron-Decay Halos from Gamma Ray Bursts

Simple arguments concerning power and acceleration efficiency show that ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRS) with energies > ∼ 10 eV could originate from GRBs. Neutrons formed through photo-pion production processes in GRB blast waves leave the acceleration site and travel through intergalactic space, where they decay and inject a very energetic proton and electron component into intergalacti...

Coronal Gamma Ray Bursts as the sources of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays?

I consider the possibility that Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays are accelerated in Gamma Ray Bursts located in the Galactic corona, thus circumventing the problem raised by Greisen–Zatsepin–Kuz’min cutoff. The acceleration of UHECRs could occur in the pulsars which, in the coronal GRB model, produce them: the same parameters that permit fitting GRBs’ observations in the model of Podsiadlowski, Re...

Ultra-high energy cosmic rays, cascade γ-rays, and high-energy neutrinos from gamma-ray bursts

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are sources of energetic, highly variable fluxes of γ rays, which demonstrates that they are powerful particle accelerators. Besides relativistic electrons, GRBs should also accelerate high-energy hadrons, some of which could escape cooling to produce ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). Acceleration of high-energy hadrons in GRB blast waves will be established if hig...

Are Extragalactic Gamma Ray Bursts The Source Of The Highest Energy Cosmic Rays?

Recent observations with the large air shower arrays of ultra high energy cosmic rays (UHECR) and recent measurements/estimates of the redshifts of gamma ray bursts (GRBs) seem to rule out extragalactic GRBs as the source of the cosmic rays that are observed near Earth, including those with the highest energies. On Gamma Ray Burst and Blazar AGN Origins of the Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays in Light of First Results from Auger

The discoveries of the GZK cutoff with the HiRes and Auger Observatories and the discovery by Auger of clustering of > ∼ 60 EeV ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) towards nearby ( < ∼ 75 Mpc) AGNs along the supergalactic plane establishes the astrophysical origin of the UHECRs. The likely sources of the UHECRs are gamma-ray bursts and radio-loud AGNs because: (1) they are extragalactic; (2)...
